Heatwave Advice

The Met Office has recently issued a level 3 Heatwave Alert – it is expected that this will continue through to Thursday, after which we should expect cooler conditions.   Public Health and Wellbeing has activated its Heatwave Plan.

The Met Office, in conjunction with PHE, is issuing the following heatwave message:

Heatwaves can be dangerous, especially for the very young or very old or those with chronic disease. Advice on how to reduce the risk either for yourself or somebody you know can be obtained from NHS Choices at www.nhs.uk/summerhealth, NHS 111 or from your local chemist.“

Please see the following advice and information for this situation and how to  keep safe:

  • Travel – If you have trips planned, ensure that sufficient water is available, and that the mode of transport has cooling. Public Health England are suggesting that only necessary journeys should be undertaken over the next few days.
  • Outdoor activities – Please give consideration to the timing of the event. For activities planned for this week we would advise you to consider carefully if you can provide sufficient shade and water. Hats and sunscreen should be worn by all, and activities should be planned to avoid the period 11 am – 3pm when the sun is hottest. It may be appropriate to consider alternative dates, when the weather is cooler.
  • Heatstroke – Are all staff familiar with the signs? Staff and clients, in particular the most vulnerable, should be monitored closely. The symptoms of heatstroke can be found at http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Heat-exhaustion-and-heatstroke/Pages/Introduction.aspx.

People with respiratory problems:

Advice to those with respiratory problems is consistent with the advice to all others during a heatwave but the below advice is especially important:

  • Keep windows shaded and closed when outside temperatures are hotter during the daytime to reduce heat (and ozone) entering the home
  • Open windows at night or when it is cooler outside, to aid cooling of the home.
  • Heatwave conditions often lead to increased ozone levels following interactions of other pollutants with sunlight.
  • Adults and children with heart or lung problems are at greater risk of symptoms. Follow your doctor’s usual advice about exercising and managing your condition. It is possible that very sensitive individuals may experience health effects even on Low air pollution days.
  • Listen to the weather forecast and the news for high temperature health warnings at www.metoffice.gov.uk
  • Health advice for those who may be particularly sensitive to air pollution is available from the UK-Air website (Defra) or an automated free-phone service run by Defra on 0800 55 66 77.
