Closure of A329 at Skew Bridge, 24 – 30 December (updated)

Update from West Berkshire Council:

Unfortunately Network Rail have now extended this closure until 30th December. This is related to unexpected utility services that have been found on the old bridge that need to be diverted.

An updated information letter from Network rail is attached and if you wish to make any comment on this please contact them via the number given.

There is still a slight possibility the works will be completed earlier than the 30th which will be a bonus. All other arrangements as previously circulated.

West Berkshire Council have informed us that the A329 is to be closed between Pangbourne and Streatley, from 2300 hrs on Tuesday 24th until Friday 27th December. The start of the closure has been timed so that the Streatley Christmas Eve event can take place.

We have also been informed that between 19-27 December the road through Beale Wildlife Park will be closed to through traffic because a crane will be positioned on the entrance roadway as part of the bridge removal works.

The closure will be at the bridge that takes the A329 across the railway between Beale Park and Mead Lane, Lower Basildon. This closure is so that Network Rail can remove the old redundant bridge adjacent to the one which now carries the A329, and has been organised to take advantage of the closure of the railway line over the holiday period. To allow the crane and associated large vehicles to access Skew Bridge, a dispensation has been issued for them to access the site via the A329 weight limits from the north.

Diversion will be via the A329 Reading Road to Cholsey, Nosworthy Way, the A4074 back to Reading, A4155 and A329 back to Pangbourne. In addition to the main diversion a local diversion will be signed via Pangbourne Hill, Reading Road and the B4009. Visitors to Basildon Park will be signed via Bethesda Street.

Access only signs will be in place to deter traffic from using the Stitchens Green area.

Enquiries should be addressed to Network Rail on 03457 114141.

The closure can be viewed on one.network (formerly roadworks.org) under the following link: A329 Skew Bridge, Lower Basildon.

Full details including a map of the diversion have been sent out to local residents in this letter from Network Rail: Basildon Skew Bridge Updated information letter

Dependent on the state of the works, emergency service access will NOT be possible past the works.
